Family Plots: Patterns of Neanderthal Violence and Body Manipulation
Abstract
A small number of European sites contain Neanderthal remains that had been modified and manipulated; patterns are often interpreted as reflecting cannibalism. A study of the demographic profiles at these sites indicates the likely presence of related social units, families, which appear to have been killed at the same time, defleshed, dismembered, fragmented, and discarded. It is proposed that this pattern reflects extreme interpersonal violence against specific social units.
